In the summer of 2012, as an outgrowth of the coming together of the CEOs of CaroMont Regional Medical Center, Gaston Family Health Services and the Gaston County Department of Health and Human Resources to address Gaston County’s low health ranking, the GCHC was asked to take the lead role in developing a community strategy to address obesity.
Based on this request, the GCHC Advisory Board adopted the following changes: 1) They would transition their program of work from the top five health issues as identified in the most recent Community Health Assessment to a single focus on obesity; 2) They would reorganize their organizational structure to reflect new work teams and community engagement.
Healthy Gaston became the brand of the new focus area in 2013 with a Kick-Off event held on July 31st at CarMont to introduce the new concept to the community. Resource teams were established and work began at a pilot site (West campus of Bethlehem Church) to develop a model program A Community Awareness Campaign began in 2014. Monthly health themes were identified and the first one, “Drink More Water” was introduced at the March 1st Bellies, Bodies and Brains event at the Schiele Museum.
